Noodle Western/ Food Porn

Standard

Tempopo

I’m not sure how to describe Tempopo- It’s a Japanese film. With an odd Western (as in wild west) feel to it. But it’s not a sushi western. The film really is about food. Yes, relationships develop and characters grow- a bit- some of them- but the focus of the movie is on food.

We follow a woman and her journey to make the best ramen noodles in order to support her and her son. She gets help from a truck driver, and he takes her to seek out many other people in their quest for the ultimate bowl of ramen. I highly recommend having noodles after the film, you’ll want them.

There are also little vignettes. A group will walk by our main characters and suddenly we are following them. Some of the vignettes are funny, some sad, one was sexy and then disturbing.

There doesn’t seem to be a point except to show how people feel about food. The movie ends with a baby nursing.
I liked Tempopo it was fun and I’m glad I watched it. I might even watch it again some day, but it is definitely an odd movie. It is not safe for kids to watch as there is nudity, and sex play with food- so personally I wouldn’t watch it with teenagers because I don’t want to explain kinks yet- or possibly ever.

If you love food, and odd Japanese films, get yourself some ramen and enjoy Tempopo.

  1. If you liked this, you would probably like Eat, Drink, Man, Woman, a Chinese film directly by Ang Lee. The film is about a widowed chef who has lost his sense of smell and his three daughters. Some romance, but the food is the real star of the show.

  2. I swear, the Japanese really do make some the oddest and best food porn movies. My roommate tends to think they’re a little weird, but I love them! So I might have to check this one out when I’ve got the place to myself and I’ve got myself some ramen! Sometimes, you really cannot beat just a nice, good bowl of it. There’s this great Asian market about half an hour from where I live that really fulfills my craving; I’m going to have to go now. Just reading this post made me desperately want some!

I’d be okay with miso instead, too. heh!

    • I love them to- the Japanese do make some really odd movies. If you do watch please let me know what you think! They are so obsessed with whatever they do. It’s amazing how intense they are bout their ramen- it’s an art form and closely guarded secret.

  3. I really need to make it over to your blog more often. I always love it. Subscribing! (RSS) Too funny Kristy! I also took belly dancing and was totally put off by the fact that the guy in the class next to me could roll his belly and I couldn’t. So unfair. LOL
